With the objective of contributing to the economic development of towns surrounding this highway and improving the productive capacity and income of nearly 600 families living in its area of influence, CAF implemented – along with the construction of the work – the Inclusive Double Track project with the Dutch cooperation agency SNV and other cooperation entities.
The La Paz – Oruro Double Route is part of Fundamental Route No. 1, which constitutes one of the main transportation routes in Bolivia. The new highway contributes to boosting the economy of the area and improving communications between both cities, as well as those related to cargo transportation to distribute goods between the interior of the country and the border with Peru.
In relation to the characteristics of the road, it should be noted that it has a topography typical of the Andean areas with cold and dry climates characteristic of the high plateau and with heights that range between 3,700 m and 4,600 m.
The geometric design of the track allows high speeds to be developed, with normally wide radii of curvature and elevations corresponding to them, and smooth transverse pumping. The type of terrain is flat with slopes that do not exceed 4% and undulating in some specific sectors.
It has signage in both directions and demarcation on the rolling surface, the latter describing a hot-applied asphalt concrete with lane widths of 3.6 meters and shoulders of 1.2 m.
