A high-risk obstetric unit is a department or specialized area in a hospital that is dedicated to the care of pregnant women who have complications or medical conditions that make them more likely to have a high-risk pregnancy.
The main pathologies treated are:
- Gestational diabetes
- Multiple pregnancies
- High blood pressure and pregnancy
- Maternal infections such as cytomegalovirus or toxoplasmosis
- Coagulation pathology: thrombophilias or thrombocytopenias
- Chronic underlying maternal pathology: certain patients present pathologies that, although they do not contraindicate pregnancy in most cases, must be managed in a specialized manner.
- Risk of prematurity: sometimes, certain pregnancies have a risk of premature birth (hospital admission due to threatened premature birth, multiple gestations, asymptomatic cervical shortening, uterine malformations, history of premature birth, etc.).
